On Saturday 23rd October I had another great day at the B2Net Stadium. A 7 goal thriller, a record attendance and I met Clemm from the Football League Show!
Chesterfield came in to this game in top spot, while Shrewsbury sat 5th, and with a big crowd expected, it was no surprise that the Football League Show had selected this as the featured League 2 match.
The rain was coming down quite heavily as we arrived, so we walked up to the Donkey Derby pub, only to find it pretty packed so we headed back to the stadium. My Dad picked up his copy of the new book ‘Saltergate Sunset’ from the club shop. He had supplied lots of photos for this great book, written by Stuart Basson; the club historian, and even had a section of his own near the back of the book filled with a selection of his best photographs from Saltergate.
We then headed in to the stadium with an hour to go before kick off. With the Football League Show here today, there was a few interviews on the pitch before kick off with the likes of Mark Crossley. There was also news that the Shrewsbury team coach had been delayed after a crash on the motorway (not involving their coach luckily). However they eventually got out on to the pitch with about 10 minutes to go before kick off, but arriving so late can’t have been good for them and must have worked to our advantage in the early stages.
Chesterfield started the first half brightly in front of a B2Net Stadium record crowd of 7,777, with 666 travelling from Shrewsbury! On the 29th minute, Jack Lester played a brilliant ball. through to Drew Talbot, who fired home to give the home side a much deserved 1-0 lead.
The first half domination from the Spireites continued when a cross found the head of Jack Lester who nodded the ball home to make it 2-0 just before half time. And to make matters worse for the Shrews, Craig Davies blasted an incredible shot in to the back of the net from a long distance to make it 3-0 before half time!
After a few half-hearted attacks early in the second half from Shrewsbury, Chesterfield made it 4-0 when Craig Davies flicked the ball home from close range to guarantee the 3 points, or at least we thought so!
After dominating for 80 minutes, John Sheridan took off Jack Lester, Mark Allott and Craig Davies, three of the most influential players, and this clearly made a difference.
A very soft goal from Van den Broek gave Shrewsbury a consolation on the 80th minute. The difference was just two when Kevin McIntyre scored, and in to stoppage time Craig Disley headed the ball home to leave a nervy ending.
Despite taking all 3 points, I left the stadium quite disappointed, having dominated for 80 minutes and looking like we could have scored 7 or 8, allowing Shrewsbury to get 3 goals back made it look like a close game when in reality it was anything but.
After the game I met Chesterfield goalscorer Craig Davies, Shrewsbury’s Benjamin Smith and Shrews manger Graham Turner.
Most exciting for me though was meeting Mark Clemmit or ‘Clemm’ from the BBC’s Football League Show. We were allowed to go around the back and meet him for a photograph. He was really friendly and chatted to us for a short time, he even noted down my website and said he would have a look.
I had a great day again at the B2Net Stadium and We are Top of the League!
