Chesterfield 2-1 Macclesfield Town – League 2

On Saturday 16th April I was at the B2Net Stadium to watch Chesterfield face Macclesfield Town in NPower League 2.

The league leaders Chesterfield came into today’s game knowing that they could officially seal promotion if they won and Shrewsbury didn’t beat Stockport. However, with the side sitting at the top of the table for almost all of the season it is only a matter of time before promotion and hopefully the title are clinched regardless of today’s result.

There was a brilliant atmosphere inside the ground, with all 4 stands filled with singing Chesterfield fans while the 142 away fans were situated in the corner of the East Stand. A new scoreboard had also been put up in the North Stand which looks good and adds to the whole ‘new stadium’ feel of the ground.

However, it was a disappointing first half for the Spireites, who failed to create many chances and then fell behind in stoppage time when Chalmers fired home from the penalty spot after being brought down by Dean Holden.

It was a total contrast in the second half though. Just minutes into the second half Jack Lester looked to have levelled for the Spireites but play was pulled back for offside. On the hour Craig Davies did level the scores with a magnificent goal that will almost certainly end up on Youtube sooner or later! (Link)

Danny Whitaker made sure the home side took all three points with a good goal on the 76th minute, giving Chesterfield a much deserved victory.

While the Spireites are yet to officially promoted, barring a total miracle they will be playing League 1 football next season against the likes of Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday!
