In the first of two events for me today we went to watch Chesterfield’s first friendly game against a strong Derby County side.
Before the Game
We arrived at 2 o’clock and did our usual walk all the way around the ground. On the way we stopped in the club shop to look at the brand new kit and as this is the final season at Saltergate, everything in the club shop is ‘End of an Era’. As we walked down the Cross Street End (the away end) I spotted Aaron Downes and he was happy to have a photo.
The match kicked off a 3 o’clock infront of 3716 supporters. The first half was rather scrappy with Chesterfield having very few chances and it was obvious that Derby were the the better side. On the 16th minute Derby’s Paul Green, who rifled the goal home from about 20 yards right in front of the Derby County fans. The second half however was a much different story. John Sheridan, Chesterfield’s new manager, made 6 substitutions and Chesterfield looked a different side. On the 48th minute, after some great play by Jack Lester to get the cross in, Scott Boden headed home the equaliser for the home side. Chesterfield looked much the better team after that and almost out played Derby County. Then late on, after a crossed in corner from Neale McDermott (who is son of EX Liverpool and Newcastle player Terry McDermott) Rob Page jumped high to head the winner home for Chesterfield.
After the Game
As it was the Derbyshire Cup game there was a small trophy presentation and Jack Lester lifted the trophy for the Spireites. After that I managed to meet Chesterfield players Mark Crossley, Darren Currie, Rob Page, Phil Picken and the managers Nigel Clough and John Sheridan.
