The Draw
The 6 teams involved were Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers, Hull City and Leeds United. They were put into 2 groups:
Group A:Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Doncaster Rovers
Group B:Hull City, Leeds United and Barnsley
The Group Matches
The first game of the evening saw Barnsley take on Hull City. The scoreline was 2-1 with Barnsley’s Wayne Biggins striking twice in the first 3 minutes. Hull managed to pull one back before half time but it wasn’t enough and Barnsley came through the winners.
The pick of the rest of the group games would have to be Sheffield Wednesday vs Sheffield United. Wednesday scored early on but United equalised almost immediately. However, after that Sheffield Wednesday dominated scoring another 3 goals to win 4-1. Other good games saw Sheffield Wednesday beat Doncaster Rovers 5-2, and Doncaster beat Sheffield United 3-2 scoring the winner with just 38 seconds left. In the other group Barnsley won through by beating Leeds 3-2.
This meant Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley had reached the final.
The Final
The first half of the final was rather tight, however it did eventually get going and after 16 minutes it was 2-2. So it meant penalties. Barnsley won penalties scoring all 5 of their penalties to win 5-3 making them the 2009 Yorkshire Masters Champions.
