When did you start playing snooker?
I started watching snooker when I was really young, 3 or 4 I think!! I started playing once a week when I was 12.
What made you become a professional snooker player?
When I was 13 I was picked to play for England and had a succesful junior career winning lots of junior tournaments. In my last year as a junior I won the British under 16, British under 19, English doubles and English team championship. I also got to the final of the European under 19…but we dont like to talk about that!!!!! After that I thought I might have a go at being professional.
Who were your favourite players from your childhood?
Steve Davis was my snooker hero. I also liked Gary Wilkinson.
What is your personal career highlight?
Not many at the minute unfortunately. I’ve never even come close to winning a ranking event which is very dissapointing.I have nobody to blame but myself to be honest, hopefully a win will come soon. One of the most memorable matches for all the wrong reasons was playing Paul Hunter at the 2005 world championships, he was a friend and had just been diagnosed with cancer. It was a very surreal atmosphere that I will never forget.
Outside of Snooker do you have any sporting hero’s?
Tiger Woods, Stuart Pearce and Lance Armstrong.
What is your favourite Snooker Tournament?
It has got to be the World Championships.
What is your favourite Snooker Venue?
The Crucible Theatre but I liked The Preston Guild hall as well. Its a shame we don’t play there anymore.
What was your highlight last season?
Even though I had a good consistant season there wasn’t many highlights. I dropped out of the top 32 the season before so needed to win some matches to get back in, which I did. I played good all season but I didn’t get past the last 16 which I was a bit dissapointed with. It shows I am going the right way though and if I keep improving at the rate that I am I have got a chance of winning something….I HOPE!!!!
What are your goals for the coming season?
I start at 18 in the provisional rankings so to get into the top 16. My main goal is to give myself a chance to win a ranking tournament, we shall see….
When you are not playing or have lost in a tournament do you still watch the games on TV?
I try not to but having so many friends on tour I find myself looking at the results all the time.
Excellent interview there Ryan. Getting some good answers out of Mr Holt.
