On 16th January 2010 I went to Saltergate to watch the Spireites play Torquay United.
League 2 strugglers Torquay United were todays opponents at Saltergate. Torquay had been struggling so far this season, but they had beaten Chesterfield on the opening day of the season at Plainmoor. Despite this the fans making the long journey must have been expecting the worst with Chesterfield pushing for a play off spot.
Chesterfield’s Barry Conlon, who had only signed for the club this morning was in the line up along with another new signing Dominic Green. However due to many loan players going back to their clubs, we seemed to have quite a weak line up compared to in earlier matches.
The Spireites totally dominated the first half but failed to score. Conlon looked to me quite impressive upfront battling for balls and trying hard to show the fans and manager what he was capable of.
The break through came in the second half as the two new signings combined and Barry Conlon fired the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the area on the 72nd minute. Just before Torquay had had a goal disallowed but looking at the replay later it was fair as the player was clearly offside.
After the match I got photos with man of the match Barry Conlon and Chesterfield’s Ian Morris.
