On Saturday 11th December 2010, I was back at the B2Net Stadium for another match involving top of the table Chesterfield, and Torquay United.
After all the snow in the days leading up to this game, I almost certainly thought it would be postponed. However, a mixture of good fortune with the snow temporarily stopping, and hard work from dedicated fans who shovelled the snow off the pitch, meant that this fixture went ahead.
With it being the middle of winter and it going dark so early I decided to get my picture with the Torquay United manager Paul Buckle before the match rather than after it. While the Torquay players got off the coach, I also got a picture with Billy Kee.
The Spireites came into this match top of the league, but having lost their last two home games against Burton and Oxford. Top scorer Craig Davies also missed this game with injury, so nobody was taking anything for granted.
Both sides were pretty much even in the early stages and cancelled each other out. Then, on the 28th minute, Jack Lester opened the scoring for the Spireites when his shot from inside the box beat Gulls keeper Scott Bevan.
Towards the later stages of the game, Torquay went pushing for an equaliser and there were some nervy moments for the home supporters. The Gulls threw on Chesterfield loanee Martin Gritton late in the game to try and salvage something, but even he couldn’t find the net for Torquay.
This win meant Chesterfield remained clear at the top of the League 2 table, and looking good for promotion.
After the match I had a picture with Martin Gritton, who is on loan at Torquay from Chesterfield. He was very friendly to me and was happy to have the picture.
Sadly, this would turn out to be the last Chesterfield match for devoted spireite Luke Goodwin, who sadly died on 19th December 2010 aged just 23. Luke went everywhere with the Spireites and was a great guy. He will be sadly missed.
RIP Luke Goodwin 1987-2010
