On Saturday 2nd October I thought I was attending just another Chesterfield home game. How wrong I was!
Well where do I start with this report?
The morning before todays game I told my Dad that I didn’t think this game would be too exciting, with the Sheffield Wednesday and Brazil v Ukraine matches coming up in the next few weeks!
Our day began by visiting the Donkey Derby pub near the ground for a drink before kick off. We then headed towards the stadium with about 45 minutes before kick off, had a burger and took our seats in the HTM East Stand.
Almost as soon as the game began Crewe took the lead. Three minutes in, it was 1-0 when Luke Murphy headed the ball home from just yards out to send the Spireites behind for the first time ever in the league at the b2net stadium.
Lee Bell curved a free kick in from the edge of the area on the 6th minute, to make it 2-0 to Crewe. It was 3-0 on the 13th minute when Scott Griffiths got caught on the break and fell over, leaving Byron Moore one-on-one with the goalkeeper and he slotted it home.
It was now a total disaster for the Spireites and most fans were in a state of shock. We had conceded more goals in the first 13 minutes of this game than we had in all the other home games put together!
Jack Lester pulled one back for Chesterfield when he headed the ball home on 23rd minute. However, the celebrations were soon silenced when on the 26th minute Shaun Miller left two defenders for dead, took it around the keeper, and put the ball in the empty net.
This was the final straw for John Sheridan, who on the half hour mark took off captain Ian Breckin for ex-youth player Craig Clay. The substitution was greeted by sarcastic applause from many of the fans and Breckin went straight down the tunnel.
With Clay now in midfield and Mattis back in the defence, Chesterfield managed to hold out for an entire 19 minutes at just 4-1, though the entire first half performance was shambles.
We were totally shocked by what we saw in the first half, and it was very disappointing to see your side playing so badly, especially at home.
Chesterfield went hell for leather in the second half, pushing forward at every chance, but nothing seemed to go right. With 16 minutes to go Jack Lester got his and Chesterfield’s second goal, heading the ball in from close range to make it 2-4.
Dean Morgan was barged down in the box on the 79th minute and the referee gave a penalty. Danny Whitaker stepped up and put the ball away, giving us all a feeling that we could actually steal a draw from the match.
Clayton Donaldson poked the ball home and made it 5-3 just a minute later, seemingly putting an end to any hope of Chesterfield getting anything out of the game.
The game was getting crazy now, with just a minute plus stoppage time to go Chesterfield won another penalty. Dean Morgan looked like he was going to take it at first, but Whitaker eventually stepped up and scored his second to make it 5-4.
It wasnt over yet though!
Two minutes into the four added on, Craig Clay, making only his second ever appearance in the first team, got the ball on the edge of the box and fired it into the bottom corner.
The entire stadium went mental, jumping around and singing. My Dad even gave our friend Michael a kiss! At the end all three home stands were singing and it was an amazing atmosphere to match an amazing game.
Chesterfield had managed to come from 3-0, 4-1 and 5-3 down to earn a draw. This was by far the most amazing I have ever seen in my life, and probably ever will! The game also broke the record for most goals I had ever seen in a game, which was previously just 7!
I was buzzing by the end, didn’t have much voice left from cheering and felt physically tired from watching it!
After the game I met players from both sides. From Chesterfield I met goalscorers Jack Lester, Danny Whitaker and Craig Clay, as well as Dean Morgan who won one of the penalties. From Crewe I met manager Dario Gradi, who was really friendly and took the result well, though I’m sure he was gutted inside. I also met Nicky Maynard of Bristol City, who was at today’s game.
Oh and finally………Bring on Wednesday!
