On Saturday 17th September I was back at the B2Net to watch Chesterfield face Carlisle United in NPower League 1.
The Spireites had hit a good run of form coming into this game having won their last 2 games and being unbeaten in 3. Meanwhile, Carlisle had not lost away this season with 3 wins and a draw so it was sure to be an exciting game.
Chesterfield’s first choice goalkeeper Tommy Lee missed his first ever League game at the B2Net Stadium due to injury and so reserve keeper Greg Fleming made his full debut for the club.
The Spireites got off to the best possible start when Leon Clarke scored inside 3 minutes to make it 1-0. Carlisle went on the attack after falling behind and levelled the score through Miller on the 20th minute, though it is debatable whether the goal should have stood due to a shove on Chesterfield keeper Greg Fleming.
It took just 6 minutes for Leon Clarke to regain the lead for Chesterfield with a quality glancing header that beat the Cumbrians keeper. It was an exciting half which Chesterfield deservedly ended ahead.
On the 51st minute Leon Clarke completed the first hat trick of his career to put the Spireites 3-1 ahead. Clarke has now scored 5 goals in 3 appearances for the Spireites and he looks like an excellent addition to the side.
By now Chesterfield were rampant and it was 4-1 on the 65th minute. Craig Westcarr got his head on Nathan Smith’s cross and the ball flew into the back of the net to guarantee Chesterfield would take all 3 points.
The game ended 4-1 and it had been by far Chesterfield’s best home performance of the season with a comfortable win in a game that I thought would be a challenge for the Spireites.
After the game I got pictures with winger Alex Mendy, Danny Whitaker, Greg Fleming, new reserve keeper Adam Smith and hat trick hero Leon Clarke. I also got pictures with Carlisle players Stephen O’Halloran, Rory Loy, Matthew Robson, Francois Zoko and the Cumbrians manager Greg Abbott.
