Chesterfield 0-2 Sheffield Wednesday – Pre-Season Friendly

CFCSWFCFr16.1

Chesterfield got their pre-season campaign underway with a defeat as first half goals from Kieran Lee and Fernando Forestieri earned Sheffield Wednesday a comfortable 2-0 victory.

The Owls started the contest strongly and Lee converted Jack Hunt’s cross from close range to open the scoring in the ninth minute.

Nineteen minutes later, Forestieri finished off a good move from the visitors with a low strike past goalkeeper Ryan Fulton to double the advantage.

From then on the outcome never really looked in doubt, despite a few decent opportunities for the Spireites, and Wednesday saw out victory in a second half that lacked any real flow or urgency.

Chesterfield moved a point closer to securing League 1 survival with a 1-1 draw against Doncaster Rovers at the Proact Stadium.

But Gboly Ariyibi’s 18th minute leveller was ultimately enough to earn the Spireites a draw that moves them on to the vital 50-point mark and five points clear of relegation with just three games remaining.

England Under-17’s got their European Championship Elite Round campaign off to the perfect start with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Turkey at Chesterfield’s Proact Stadium.

Arsenal youngster Reiss Nelson put the Three Lions ahead two minutes before half time and two minutes after the restart, the hosts advantage was doubled courtesy of 16-year-old Jonathan Leko.

Nelson doubled his tally from the penalty spot six minutes later to put England out of sight and despite Furkan Korkut scoring a late consolation for the visitors, it was a good start for two-time Under-17 European champions as they look to qualify for the finals in Azerbaijan.

GlanfordAway1

Jamal Campbell-Ryce scored on his debut to earn Chesterfield a valuable point against in-form Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park.

But the Spireites were much improved after the interval and Campbell-Ryce got on the end Jay O’Shea’s cross to score just seconds after coming off the bench to move his new side five points clear of the relegation zone.

Chesterfield 1-4 Walsall – League 1

DSCN4452

Chesterfield’s unbeaten run was brought to end by Walsall on a miserable afternoon for the Spireites at the Proact Stadium.

Sam Mantom’s second-half brace, along with a goal from Jordy Hiwula, earned the Saddlers a 4-1 victory in interim manager Jon Whitney’s first game at the helm.

The first half had been an even affair with chances at both ends and a goal for each side, both coming from own goals – James O’Connor and Tom Anderson being the unfortunate defenders who found their own net.

But a moment of madness from Dion Donohue saw the defender sent off in a scuffle following the visitors’ second goal and this ultimately proved to be the turning point as the Saddlers ran riot from then on to re-establish their promotion push with a dominant victory.
